Crowns & Veneers Q & A

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are synthetic “caps” that cover all visible surfaces of a natural tooth. They serve a number of functions, including:

  • Protecting worn-down teeth
  • Strengthening chipped or cracked teeth
  • Completing a root canal
  • Improving irregularities in the size or shape of teeth
  • Anchoring dental bridges
  • Completing dental implant treatment

Crowns can be made of different materials like metal, ceramic, porcelain, or a combination of porcelain over metal. Dental crowns are a versatile treatment that also beautifies your smile.

What is the process for getting a dental crown?

During the planning stage of the process, Dr. Ahuja gathers imaging to learn more about your teeth and bone tissue. Digital X-rays and CEREC® Primescan imaging are available.

On the day of your procedure, you’ll receive numbing medication to keep you comfortable as Dr. Ahuja removes a portion of your natural tooth tissue to make room for your crown. She then makes impressions to guide the fabrication of the crown and places a temporary crown to protect your tooth.

Once the new crown arrives, you’ll return to have it checked for fit and appearance before being cemented into place, completing the treatment.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are a cosmetic treatment that covers the visible portion of your teeth with sculpted thin porcelain or a composite material. Veneers allow you to correct multiple cosmetic issues at once, making them a great return on your investment.

It takes multiple visits to complete the dental veneers process. During the first stage, imaging is done to guide treatment. On the day of the procedure, an injection of anesthetic keeps you comfortable as Dr. Ahuja removes a small portion of your tooth tissue to allow room for your veneers. Impressions are made and sent to the dental lab where your veneers are crafted.

Dr. Ahuja places temporary veneers while you wait for your new veneers to arrive. You’ll then return to have them secured into place, and you’ll walk out with your new smile ready to share with the world.
