Dental Implants Q & A

Why is it important to replace missing teeth?

Most people only think about the aesthetic ramifications of missing teeth, but there are also serious dental health issues to consider. Each of your teeth is anchored directly in the underlying bone tissue. When you bite down or chew, you stimulate that bone tissue, a process that keeps it healthy and strong.

Losing a tooth means losing that stimulation. This can cause the bone to begin to wear away through resorption, weakening the connection between your remaining teeth and the bone tissue that lies beneath. That can cause additional tooth loss and can also destabilize your bite.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a permanent replacement for missing teeth. Individual implants consist of an implanted metal post that replaces the root of a tooth, an artificial crown that replaces the visible portion of a tooth, and in some systems, a small connector piece called an abutment between the post and crown.

You can have a single dental implant to replace an individual tooth, or there are systems like All-on-4® that can replace an entire upper or lower span of missing teeth using only four implanted posts. Because implants are secured within your bone tissue, they preserve bone health and essentially function just like your natural teeth.

What steps are involved in getting a dental implant?

The planning stage is among the most important elements of implant dentistry. Smile Daily Dentistry has state-of-the-art imaging technology like digital X-rays, CT scanning, and CEREC® Primescan to guide treatments like dental implants. Advanced software systems create customized treatment planning.

On the day of your procedure, an injection of local anesthetic ensures you won’t feel any pain or discomfort. Dr. Ahuja creates an incision in your gum tissue to access the underlying bone. She then drills a small pilot hole to guide insertion of the post.

Once the post is in place, the gums are closed and a period of healing follows. You’ll return weeks later to have the crown attached to the post, which completes the procedure.
