Invisalign® Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a tray-based alignment system that’s an alternative to traditional metal braces. The process uses custom-fitted clear plastic trays to place gentle pressure on your teeth, slowly shifting them into enhanced alignment.

Invisalign can treat many of the same issues as traditional braces. The process begins with a planning visit where an intraoral scanner gathers digital imaging of your teeth and bone tissue. The proprietary software then creates your customized treatment plan. You’ll even be able to see what your smile will look like once treatment is complete.

What are some of the advantages of Invisalign?

Many people choose to straighten their smile with Invisalign because they don’t want to go through a year or more in metal braces. Once your clear aligner trays are in place, most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them.

You can go through your days without a gleaming metal grin, and you won’t experience any of the soft tissue irritation brought on by metal wires, brackets, and other braces components. Invisalign also requires fewer office visits than metal braces.

The ability to maintain normal dental hygiene routines is also a big draw of Invisalign and other tray-based alignment systems. Metal brackets and wires provide a multitude of places for plaque, bacteria, and food particles to thrive. With Invisalign, you simply remove the trays and brush and floss normally.

What is it like to go through Invisalign treatment?

After your initial office visit, it takes a couple of weeks for your aligner trays to arrive from the lab. You’ll return to learn how to put them in and take them out, and to discuss your treatment timeline.

You’ll wear your aligners around the clock, removing them only to eat, drink, and clean your teeth. Every couple of weeks you’ll switch to a new set of aligners to continue your treatment progress.

A degree of soreness is normal for a day or two after switching to new aligner trays. This is similar to the sensation of having a new wire placed in metal braces, and it indicates that your treatment is moving forward. After a day or two, your aligners will fit more comfortably.
